Fe550D means a minimum yield strength of 550 MPa; the 'D' marks higher ductility (at least 14.5% elongation under IS 1786). IS 13920 calls for ductile bars in earthquake-resistant detailing, and Chennai lies in seismic Zone III, so most engineers specify Fe500D or Fe550D for houses.

Fe500D has a minimum yield strength of 500 MPa and at least 16% elongation; Fe550D has 550 MPa and at least 14.5% elongation (IS 1786). Both are ductile 'D' grades suitable for Chennai houses, so follow your structural engineer's drawing. We stock Fe550D from all five brands; ARS CRS Fe550D adds corrosion resistance for sites near the sea.

All five brands we stock (ARS CRS Fe550D, Arun Plus, PFI Thirumala, Sangam and Tulsyan) are Fe550D bars made to IS 1786. ARS CRS Fe550D is corrosion-resistant, which helps on sites close to the sea (ECR, OMR, Besant Nagar). Whichever brand you pick, check the BIS licence number and grade rolled on the bar and ask for the mill test certificate (MTC).

Standard practice: Columns use 16mm–25mm bars as main reinforcement with 8mm stirrups. Beams use 12mm–20mm main bars with 8mm stirrups. Slabs typically use 8mm–12mm bars. These vary by structural design — your structural engineer's drawings are the definitive reference. Building Needs supplies all diameters from 8mm to 32mm.

Mills usually charge a size extra on thin and very thick bars. For ARS and Arun Plus, the calculator above applies the size-wise rate, so 8mm, 10mm and 32mm cost a little more per kg. Sangam, Tulsyan and PFI are currently sold at one flat per-kg rate for all sizes.

Our calculator uses book weights from the mill section table: a 12 m length of 12mm bar is about 10.75 kg and of 16mm about 19 kg (IS 1786 nominal: 0.888 kg/m and 1.58 kg/m). IS 1786:2008 allows a mass tolerance, checked per bar sample, of ±7% for bars up to 10 mm, ±5% for bars over 10 mm up to 16 mm, and ±3% for bars over 16 mm. Our calculator uses book weights as an estimate; customer billing is based on the supplier's weight.

We quote TMT steel per kg, before GST. The price per tonne is the per-kg rate × 1,000, because 1 tonne is 1,000 kg. The price per bar is the per-kg rate × the weight of that bar: a 12 m bar of 12mm is about 10.75 kg in our calculator, so its price is the per-kg rate × 10.75. All three are ex-GST; add 18% GST and transport. The per-bar line under the brand list and the calculator above do this maths for you.

CRS stands for corrosion-resistant steel: bars made to rust more slowly than standard bars. Consider it for sites close to the sea in Chennai (ECR, OMR, Ennore, Besant Nagar), for basements, sumps and water tanks, and wherever the steel stays damp. It does not replace good concrete cover and curing. We supply ARS CRS Fe550D as our CRS bar; follow your structural engineer's specification.

Fe600 is a higher-strength grade listed in IS 1786, but we do not stock it. Fe550D (minimum 550 N/mm² yield, 600 N/mm² tensile, 14.5% elongation) is the common choice for Chennai houses and buildings because the D grade adds ductility. Use whichever grade your structural drawing specifies; all five brands we supply are Fe550D.

Your structural engineer decides. The usual practice is to keep one grade throughout — never mix Fe500D and Fe550D unless the drawing allows it — and to use one brand within a member, such as all the main bars of a column. All five brands we supply are Fe550D to IS 1786, so a change of brand between floors or stages is common; ask your engineer first.

CTD (cold twisted deformed) bars are made by twisting steel cold. TMT (thermo-mechanically treated) bars are quenched with water straight after rolling, which gives a hard outer layer and a softer, more ductile core. TMT has largely replaced CTD in house construction because it bends without cracking and is easier to weld. We supply TMT bars only.
