What You Pay For — Base Rate, Size Extras, GST and Freight

The rates in the table above are the base price per kg of Fe550D, before GST and transport. Four things make up the final bill:

1. Base rate per kg. The brand's rate in the price table. Sangam, Tulsyan and PFI Thirumala charge this one rate for every size.

2. Size extra. For ARS and Arun Plus, 8 mm, 10 mm and 32 mm bars cost a little more per kg than the base rate. Each brand's sizes page shows the rate for every diameter: ARS sizes and Arun Plus sizes.

3. 18% GST. Charged on the steel value and shown separately on the GST invoice under HSN 7214.

4. Transport. Charged by distance and load, and quoted with your order.

What Moves TMT Steel Prices in Chennai

TMT rates in Chennai move with the cost of making steel and the cost of getting it to a site. Many regional mills work from steel scrap, sponge iron or bought-in billets, so their rates tend to follow what those inputs cost. National primary producers start further back, from iron ore and coking coal, so their costs follow different inputs and the two groups do not always change price at the same time.

Freight is the second factor. Diesel prices and lorry availability add to the cost of every ton that reaches a site, which is why our rates are quoted before transport and the delivered cost depends on distance and load.

Demand is the third. Rates tend to firm when construction and infrastructure work is busy and soften when sites slow down, for example when heavy rain stops work for days at a time.

We do not forecast prices. The trend table above shows what our published rates actually did, and when a rate changes and we have recorded the reason, it appears under the table as "Why prices moved".

Where Chennai's TMT Steel Comes From

Most TMT bought in Chennai is rolled in Tamil Nadu, not at distant national plants. Two of the five brands we price, ARS and Tulsyan, are made at plants in the Gummidipoondi industrial area north of Chennai, near the Andhra Pradesh border, so the haul to a city site is short.

How a mill makes its steel shapes its costs, and so its price:

We do not stock national brands such as Tata Tiscon, JSW Neosteel or SAIL. For reference, Tata nexarc's Chennai listing in October 2026 put Tata Tiscon and JSW Neosteel at about ₹60 to ₹74 per kg. Whatever the brand, compare the grade, the BIS licence number rolled on the bar and the mill test certificate, not the name alone.

Fe500D vs Fe550D — Which TMT Grade is Best for House Construction in Chennai?

The two TMT grades most specified in Chennai are Fe500D and Fe550D. Both are ductile ('D') grades made to IS 1786 and suitable for RCC construction. Here's how they compare:

Coastal Sites — CRS Bars and Concrete Cover

Salt in the air near the sea makes reinforcement rust faster. Two things protect the bars: the concrete around them, and the bar itself.

Concrete cover comes first. IS 456 treats concrete exposed to a coastal environment as "severe" exposure. For that it calls for at least 45 mm nominal cover and at least M30 concrete in reinforced work. Your structural engineer sets the exposure class and the cover; follow the drawing.

CRS bars add a margin. Corrosion-resistant (CRS) TMT, such as ARS CRS Fe550D in our price table, is alloyed to slow rusting. It helps on sites near the sea, but it does not make up for thin cover or poorly compacted concrete.

Joints in thick bars. IS 456 does not allow lap splices for bars larger than 36 mm. For 25 mm and 32 mm bars, many engineers specify mechanical couplers instead of laps to avoid crowded steel at the joint. Follow what the drawing specifies.

The five brands we price are Tamil Nadu regional TMT brands, all Fe550D to IS 1786. National primary brands such as Tata Tiscon or JSW Neosteel are not stocked, so we do not list a price for them. When you compare any two brands, check the grade, the BIS licence number rolled on the bar and the mill test certificate.

How to Check TMT Bar Quality Before You Pay

When buying TMT steel bars in Chennai, here are key quality checks you should perform to ensure you are getting genuine IS 1786 certified material:

1. BIS mark on the bar: Every genuine TMT bar must have the BIS certification mark rolled into the bar surface. Look for the ISI mark with "IS 1786", the grade (Fe550D) and the BIS licence (CM/L) number rolled on the bar. To check that number, enter it under "Verify Licence Details" in the BIS Care app from the Bureau of Indian Standards: it shows who holds the licence, for which standard, and whether it is valid.

2. Mill test certificate (MTC): Always ask your supplier for the Mill Test Certificate from the manufacturer. This document contains the chemical composition and mechanical test results for the specific batch.

3. Visual inspection: Quality TMT bars should have uniform ribs (transverse ribs) along the full length, no surface cracks or seams, consistent diameter, and no excessive rust or scale.

4. Bend test: A simple site test — a quality bar should bend 180° around the mandrel size IS 1786 specifies for its grade and diameter without cracking. This checks ductility.

TMT Bar Weight per 12 m Length — 8 mm to 32 mm

The standard (book) weights per bar are estimates for quotes, the same weights used in our TMT calculator. Customer billing is based on the supplier's weight. The kg/m column is the IS 1786 nominal unit weight, for reference only.

Weight, Tolerance and the Weighbridge

TMT is sold by weight, so the weight on the bill matters as much as the rate. The nominal weight of a bar is kg per metre = diameter² ÷ 162, with the diameter in mm. For 12 mm: 144 ÷ 162 = 0.889 kg per metre, or about 10.7 kg for a 12 m bar. That is how the nominal column in the table above is worked out.

Real bars never weigh exactly the nominal figure. IS 1786 allows a batch of bars to vary from nominal mass by:

Single test bars are allowed a slightly wider range. Because two loads of the same size can weigh differently, we bill on the supplier's weight for the load, not the book weight; book weights are for quotes only. When the steel arrives:

1. Match the weight. The weight on the invoice should match the supplier's weighbridge slip or delivery note for that load.

2. Match the heat number. The heat number on the mill test certificate should match the tag on your bundles. A certificate is evidence only for the heat it names.

From Bar Bending Schedule to Order

We don't publish a "kg per sq ft" figure, because the steel in a house depends on its structural design. The accurate route is the bar bending schedule (BBS) your structural engineer prepares from the drawings. It lists every bar mark with its diameter, the number of bars and the cutting length. To turn it into an order:

1. Add up the length for each diameter: number of bars × cutting length, totalled per size.

2. Convert to kg: total metres × diameter² ÷ 162.

3. Count 12 m bars: total metres ÷ 12, rounded up, plus the offcuts your engineer or bar bender plans for.

4. Send it to us: a photo or PDF of the BBS on WhatsApp, with your site location. We quote today's rate for each size and the delivered cost. Minimum order 1 ton.

Storing TMT Steel on a Chennai Site

Chennai gets most of its heavy rain from the northeast monsoon, October to December, so that is when steel waiting on site is most at risk.

Off the ground. Stack bars on timber or concrete blocks, never on bare soil or where water collects.

Covered, with air underneath. Cover the stack with a tarpaulin, but leave the sides open enough for air to move so moisture does not stay trapped.

Sorted by size, tags kept. Stack each diameter separately and keep the bundle tags, so the right bar and its test certificate are easy to find.

Order to your pour schedule. Buy in lots that match the work ahead and use the oldest bundles first. A thin, even film of surface rust is normal; brush off loose, flaking rust before the bars are tied.
