Short answer: use washed M-Sand for concrete and brickwork, and P-Sand (the finer plaster grade of manufactured sand) for plastering. River sand still works, but supply in Tamil Nadu is restricted and unreliable, so buy it only from a legal source. Today in Chennai: Water Wash M-Sand ₹5800/unit, P-Sand ₹6500/unit.

The mason wants river sand for plaster. The engineer's drawing just says "fine aggregate to IS 383". A neighbour switched to M-sand last year and blames it for the cracks in his compound wall. And the lorry is booked for Thursday.

That's the real M-sand vs river sand question in Chennai: the sand you can actually get, for the job in front of you, at a price you can check. We're a Chennai distributor of washed M-Sand and P-Sand. We don't sell river sand, so read us with that in mind. Below we're straight about where river sand still does the job better.

Which Sand for Which Job: Quick Verdict

Job on siteUseWhy
Footings, columns, beams, slab concreteWater Wash M-SandGraded, steady supply. Ask for Zone II grading (IS 383) for concrete work
Brick and block masonry mortarM-Sand or P-SandEither works. P-Sand gives a slightly smoother joint
Internal plaster and ceilingsWater Wash P-SandFiner grains, smoother finish
External rough coatP-Sand or M-SandYour plasterer's call. Texture matters less outside
Final skim coatP-Sand, or legally sourced river sand if your plasterer insistsRounded grains trowel easiest
Levelling, filling, backfillCone Dust (₹3000/unit)It's filler. Not sand for concrete or plaster

If you remember one row, make it the plaster one. Coarse M-Sand on an internal wall gives a sandpaper finish. The plasterer works it longer, the painter needs more putty to hide it, and you pay twice.

Strength: good M-Sand matches or beats river sand

Angular grains interlock. In concrete that's an advantage, and published comparisons report equal or better strength from well-graded M-Sand. The weak word in that sentence is "well-graded". An unwashed load full of rock dust soaks up water and cement, and you lose what the shape gave you.

Workability: river sand wins, narrowly

Rounded grains roll past each other, which is why plasterers like river sand. M-Sand needs slightly more water or a plasticiser for the same flow. The trouble starts when the mix feels stiff and someone tips in another bucket of water. Each extra litre weakens the concrete you already paid cement for. Ask your engineer about a plasticiser instead.

Supply: M-Sand, easily

M-Sand comes from quarries that run all year. River sand in Tamil Nadu goes through restricted, permit-based supply, and the queue sets your schedule, not your contractor.

Our live rates are in the box at the top of this page and on the M-Sand price in Chennai page, with a trend table of how they have moved. We won't quote a river-sand rate because we don't sell it. For scale, DT Next reported in 2020 Chennai builders paying about ₹10,000 a unit for river sand against ₹7,000 for M-sand. That's a 2020 number. Check today's rate with your source.

Why River Sand Is Hard to Get in Tamil Nadu

Years of heavy sand mining damaged river beds such as the Cauvery, Palar and Vaigai. Tamil Nadu responded by restricting river-sand mining and moving what supply remains onto permits and government-controlled sale. That supply is slow and uneven, and some buyers turn to imported sand or whatever a broker can find.

That last route is where Chennai's particular risk comes in. Sea sand looks like river sand. It also carries salt, and chlorides corrode the steel inside your columns years after the plaster hides them. The checklist below covers how to spot it.

M-Sand, P-Sand and Cone Dust Aren't the Same Thing

People sell several materials as "M-sand". They behave differently:

Can You Mix M-Sand and River Sand?

Yes, and plenty of sites do. The common split is M-Sand for concrete, masonry and the base plaster coat, with a finer sand (P-Sand or legal river sand) for the final skim coat. If you blend the two in one mix, let your engineer set the ratio and try a small batch first. Two sands from two sources never behave quite like either one alone.

How to Check a Sand Load Before It's Tipped

Five minutes at the gate saves a wall. Check these before you sign for any sand, ours included:

  1. Jar test for silt. Fill a clear bottle or measuring jar about one-third with sand, add water to two-thirds and a pinch of salt, shake hard, and leave it for 3 hours. Silt settles as a separate layer on top of the sand. Many field guides treat a layer thicker than about 8% of the sand's height as a sign the sand needs washing; if your engineer has set a limit, use that. For a formal answer, ask for a lab test under IS 2386 (Part 2). What goes wrong: reading it after 10 minutes, when the silt hasn't settled yet.
  2. Palm rub. Rub a damp handful between your palms. Clean sand leaves little behind. A brown or grey smear that won't brush off is clay or silt.
  3. Look and taste for sea sand. Touch a few grains to your tongue. Salt means sea sand, and it shouldn't go near reinforced concrete. Shell pieces give it away too.
  4. Watch it tip. A big cloud of dust from an "M-Sand" load means too many fines. Washed sand looks damp and settles quietly.
  5. Measure the volume. 1 unit = 100 cubic feet (about 2.83 m³). Measure the lorry body (length × width × height of the sand, in feet) and divide by 100. What goes wrong: measuring a heaped load as if it were level, or measuring after it has slumped in transit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is M-Sand good for plastering?

Use P-Sand, the plaster grade of manufactured sand. Ordinary M-Sand is coarser and leaves a rough finish on internal walls and ceilings. For an external rough coat, M-Sand is fine.

Can I use M-Sand for slab and column concrete?

Yes. Washed, well-graded M-Sand is widely used for RCC in Chennai. Ask for Zone II grading (IS 383), and get the mix and water-cement ratio from your engineer.

Which zone of sand is used for concrete?

IS 383 splits fine aggregate into Zones I (coarsest) to IV (finest). Zone II is the usual request for concrete. Very fine Zone IV sand is generally avoided in reinforced concrete.

Can M-Sand and river sand be mixed?

Yes. The common practice is M-Sand for concrete and the base coat, with a finer sand for the final plaster coat. If you blend them in one mix, let your engineer fix the ratio and try a small batch first.

How do I check silt in sand at site?

Do the jar test. Shake sand with water and a pinch of salt in a clear jar, wait 3 hours, and measure the silt layer on top. A layer thicker than about 8% of the sand's height is a common sign the sand needs washing or a lab test; use your engineer's limit if one is set.

What is 1 unit of sand?

One unit is 100 cubic feet, about 2.83 m³. In Chennai, M-Sand and P-Sand are sold by the unit, and our rates are per unit.

Which is stronger, M-Sand or river sand?

Well-graded, washed M-Sand gives concrete strength equal to or better than river sand in published comparisons. A dusty, unwashed load does worse than either. The quality of the particular load matters more than the type.
