Which Grade Does IS 456 Ask For?
IS 456:2000 sets the minimum concrete grade for reinforced concrete by how exposed it will be. Your structural engineer's drawings decide; this is what the code's floor looks like.

What this means in Chennai: IS 456 does not class concrete in a coastal area as "mild", so the code minimum for RCC here is realistically M25, and M30 for concrete that faces sea air (ECR, Besant Nagar, Thiruvanmiyur, Ennore). M20 still suits protected interior work, and M10–M15 is for plain concrete (PCC) only.

M20 (20 N/mm² at 28 days) and M25 (25 N/mm²) differ in strength and in where IS 456 allows them. M20 is the minimum for reinforced concrete only where exposure is mild — and IS 456 does not class a coastal area as mild. A boom pump places concrete through a truck-mounted arm — best for high-rise slabs and long reach, and it is faster. A line pump pushes concrete through pipes laid on the ground — suited to ground-level work and narrow access, and usually costs less. Pump charges are quoted with the RMC order.
As nominal mixes under IS 456 (cement : sand : aggregate): M10 is 1:3:6, M15 is 1:2:4 and M20 is 1:1.5:3. M25 and higher grades are design mixes (IS 10262) proportioned by the batching plant for the required strength.
Length × width × thickness, all in metres, gives cubic metres. Example: a 10 m × 5 m slab, 125 mm thick = 10 × 5 × 0.125 = 6.25 m³. 1 m³ ≈ 35.3 cft. Add a small allowance for wastage and uneven formwork.
Cube samples are taken at the site and tested at 7 and 28 days. The 28-day compressive strength is the grade — for example 20 N/mm² for M20 and 25 N/mm² for M25.
